Skills

From EternalRealms

Jump to: navigation, search

Skills in Eternal Realms are organized into a precedence tree. Skills increase with use, and may require other skills before they can be learned. One example of this might be the skill backstab, which could require 40/100 in sneak and 60/100 in dagger.

Each player initially has access to all of the base skills. They begin with 1 point in each that they try. As they keep working on the skills (by using related commands), their ranking in that skill increases.

Some skills have prerequisites that are required before gaining that skill. In these cases, they start at 1 point as soon as the player has reached a certain level in the preceding skills.

There is room for a teaching system, we can work out the details anytime.

In Omega Earth, high level skills are blocked unless a player is accepted into a school that allows the learning of that skill. A player may only be in one such school at a time.

Alternatively, we may implement other methods of skill maximization.

Some thoughts Tyler had about skills that would be interesting to think about:

Eternal realms should take into account both declarative knowledge (facts) and procedural knowledge (skills) Now declarative knowledge would be knowledge that is found in game, or eventually I guess out of game, in books, tomes, scrolls etc. If anyone has discovered the proper declarative knowledge they should properly be able to perform the instructions. So there might not be a chemistry "skill" because chemistry can be done be just properly following the instructions one might find in a book. Although it would probably be important to take into account a characters diligence and intelligence when deciding how well they were able to follow instructions.

Procedural knowledge, or knowledge that is truly skill based and can only be learned from practice, such as juggling or backflipping a still probably best represented in this game with the standard skill tree and points system. However it would be interesting if certain skills were easier to master than others... so it might only take a person 50 skill points to gain a mastery of backflipping, but it might take 300 skill points to become a master sword fighter.

Skills are FUN!

In an attempt to make skill use fun, we have decided it would be best to avoid the standard "navigate through skill tree menu, pick a skill, wait for skill to complete" style of play for something more player active. The best current example of this in an MMO is how skills are used in Tale of the Desert.

In eternal realms it would be nice to have a series of mini games (similar to WarioWare style) that you would complete for each task. Let's look at tailoring as an example skill. You might first have a mini game where you need to thread a needle. Then you would be brought to a mini game where you have to outline a pattern with the mouse. The last mini game you would play might involve driving a sewing machine over a stitch.

The final quality of the product would depend on how well you performed each of these tasks.

I think skill level would still apply but in different ways..

P.S. Maybe we should have a skill game for all combat actions... so if you decide to attack someone a small bar would show up and you would want to try and time the swing and of the weapon to the highest attack spot on the bar. Something similar to most golf games. There is a hot spot on a bar, and a pointer moving back and forth. The goal is to get the pointer to stop in the hot spot.
